Happy Birthday Rupert Friend!!!

Worth re-posting here are theseinteresting RF info I previously posted...

A multi-talentedactor/writer/director (he can sing too!Watch him sing in Mrs. Palfrey and listen to him sing in Lullaby movies!), Rupert has two short films (heco-wrote and co-produced) titled The Suicide Brothers (2010 with Keira Knightley and Tom Misonco-starred with him) and Steve(2011) starring Colin Firth, Keira Knightley, and Tom Mison), which he also wrote, co-produced, and directed. Two years ago, Rupert Friend was honored a Crystal Image Award for his work on 'Steve'. Videos: Watch director Rupert Friend promotes his short film 'Steve' starring Colin Firth and Keira Knightley

As for his acting and movies, for those of you looking for a movie starring RF in a bigger, leading male role where he plays the good guy (handsome and charming too), check out and see Rupert in The Young Victoria (as Prince Albert) with Emily Blunt andMrs Palfrey at The Claremont (as Ludovic Meyer...see a video clip of him singing below...one of my favorite scenes with him in the movie). I highly recommend you check out and see RF in these two great films. You'll love him, he was amazing in both films! But if you prefer the bad boy type of roles he played (and quite convincingly as well...he's such a very good, underrated, and versatile character actor!)... then, watch him in his small (and still memorable) supporting roles in films like Pride & Prejudice(2005) as unlikable Mr. Wickham andThe Boy in the Striped Pajamas as the bad boy jerk Liutenant Kotler.

Also, check out and listen to Rupert singing "Declaration"and a duet called"Suddenly" with Lullaby co-star Clémence Poésy from the folk/jazz genreLullaby soundtrack (which featured , the catchy tune from the Lullaby trailer)

All six episodes of series five in Richard Warlow's Victorian-set crime drama Ripper Street will arrive on Amazon Video in the UK on the 12th of October.

Amazon rescued the detective drama after its cancellation by the BBC in 2013, giving Warlow the chance to expand the story of Edmund Reid and co. with three further series.

According to the Amazon press bumf, the show's six final episodes "make up one single story. Our heroes become fugitives, forved to operate outside the law as they pursue the most insidious enemy they have encountered yet." Said enemy is "a serial killer with subhuman desires, but a superhuman ability to avoid apprehension", played by Robin Hood's Jonas Armstrong.

The new episodes will welcome the return of Matthew Macfadyen, Adam Rothenberg, MyAnna Buring, with series two's Joseph Mawle making a return appearance as Detective Inspector Jedidiah Shine.

Series four is currently nearing the end of its run on BBC Two.  [Den of Geek]

I've always wanted Keira Knightley & Matthew Macfadyen to work together again in another movie whether they pair up as a couple or just co-stars. Well, good news! It may not be the former, but looks like the latter is happening, Keira& Matthew are reuniting and co-starring together in a new Walt Disney Pictures feature film titled The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, a live-action adaptation of E.T.A. Hoffman’s Christmas Eve tale about a young girl who finds a Nutcracker doll among the family’s gifts and is charged by her parents to take special care of it. This will be their third film together since Pride & Prejudice and Anna Karenina! The only one missing is director Joe Wright, but unfortunately, he's not directing this one, Lasse Hallström (Chocolat, The Hundred-Foot's Journey) is. Still, I'm glad KK& MM are going to be in the same movie. So, yeah, I'm even more excited and looking forward for this movie now, which is currently in pre-production with a stellar cast and is slated for 2018 release! I previously posted here last August that Keira Knightley to play Sugar Plum Fairy in Disney's The Nutcracker and more casting (scroll down below) has been announced since then.

More info. on MM's casting in The Nutcracker film and also his casting on the HBO pilot titled Succession, and Keira's casting in The Aftermath film below...

THE NUTCRACKER AND THE FOUR REALMS SYNOPSIS
The classic story told of a young girl named Clara who receives a nutcracker doll from her godfather on Christmas Eve. Succession (Pilot) - HBO

HBO has ordered drama pilot for Succession.

The drama will explore family loyalty, international business, and the perils of power in the 21st century. The plot has been drawing parallels to the ongoing real-life saga of the Redstone media clan.
Matthew Macfadyen will play Tom, Shiv’s ambitious partner/fiancé and a senior executive at the firm.  Shiv (Siobhan) Roy (actress Sarah Snook), Logan (Brian Cox)’s only daughter and younger sister to Kendall (Jeremy Strong) and Roman (Kieran Culkin). Like Roman, she sits on the board of directors but does not work at the firm and has been pursuing a career in politics.
Read more info. on DeadlineThe pilot will film in New York.

And lastly, Deadline also reported that Fox Searchlight Lands ‘The Aftermath’ With Keira Knightley & Alexander Skarsgard.

EXCLUSIVE: In feverish bidding, Fox Searchlight has acquired The Aftermath, a Scott Free-produced adaptation of the Rhidian Brook novel that has Keira Knightley and Alexander Skarsgard in talks to star, with James Kent directing. He helmed Testament Of Youth. Ridley Scott is producing.

Numerous companies vied for the package, but Searchlight closed the deal. Race scribes Anna Waterhouse and Joe Shrapnel adapted the screenplay.

The book, an international bestseller, is set in postwar Germany in 1946. Rachael Morgan arrives in the ruins of Hamburg in the bitter winter, to be reunited with her husband Lewis, a British colonel charged with rebuilding the shattered city. But as they set off for their new home, Rachael is stunned to discover that Lewis has made an extraordinary decision: They will be sharing the grand house with its previous owners, a German widower and his troubled daughter. In this charged atmosphere, enmity and grief give way to passion and betrayal.

Happy Birthday Matthew Macfadyen!

Today (October 17th) is Matthew Macfadyen's 42nd birthday! Matthew, best known to us P&P Fans as Mr. Darcy (forever) of the 2005 Pride & Prejudice film, was born David Matthew Macfadyen in Great Yarmouth, Northfolk, England, UK in 1974 (42 years ago today!).

Happy Birthday Matthew Macfadyen!!!
(Mr. Darcy!)

Some interesting MM quotes talking about his iconic Darcy role/character (while you watch an MM Birthday tribute video...though in Spanish, but it included an English translation/subtitles below) worth re-posting here again and again as well as updated MM in various characters collage below...

(source: )

"Some would say, `He’s arrogant’; I would say, he’s misunderstood. And a fantastic part to play!" (Matthew Macfadyen about his Mr. Darcy role)

Matthew Macfadyen admits Austen’s deft satire and classic caricatures offered a little levity. So, too, did shooting the film. The reality of the sweeping, tear-inspiring climactic scene, when Darcy does his best Byronic stride across a misty field toward his true love Lizzie, was anything but romantic gravitas, he says. “I’m shortsighted, so I couldn’t see Keira and the director was waving his red jacket, screaming, `Left! Turn left.´

“Darcy achieved iconic status thanks to Mr. Colin Firth. So it was daunting in that respect. But I understood who Darcy was and I sympathized with him. It makes your job easier when you get a part that is so well-written.”

“I can confirm that there is no wet-shirt episode in the upcoming version. My pecs and I will not be seen emerging in a sultry fashion from a lake. I had seen his wet-shirt scene at an awards ceremony, but I hadn’t really registered the impact of it. So I was unprepared for the ‘How are you going to make it different?’ question.”

“It was daunting in that I was aware there was the `Darcy thing,´ and that people are quite proprietarily about Pride & Prejudice as a whole. ‘Why are they making another version?’ ‘How dare they?’ ‘You better not fuck it up!’ They’re really fierce, the Jane-ites. Which is good, because it’s a classic, and it’s much loved. But I hadn’t seen the BBC version, so I didn’t really worry about it. Because you can’t as an actor, otherwise you could never play Hamlet or you could never play Richard III. Actually it was quite flattering to be in such good company. A lot of people asked me how I would be trying to make it different from Colin Firth, which is strange because even if I had seen him, I wouldn’t try, because you couldn’t. You do what you can do.”

Quotes about MM from his P&P director Joe Wright and co-star Keira Knightley...

"First, Matthew's the right age. Second, he's a big strong manly man. I didn't want a pretty boy, boy band kind of boy, I wanted a man, and he's an incredible actor. I've loved his work for many years and I think he is an astonishingly good actor. I know also he is not vain; he's not coming to the role trying to promote himself as a f---ing sex symbol. He's coming as an actor trying to understand who his character is. He's interested in people and I think that's probably why he acts and so for all of those reasons he felt perfect. Also, he is just a big sexy man and when I put him opposite Keira Knightley they were just astonishing together." (Joe Wright)

“I had never seen the TV dramas or the film, so I was able to look for the Darcy I had in my head -- and Matthew Macfadyen was the only one for me. Darcy is 28, and Matthew was 29 when we were shooting. I had no interest in casting just a pretty boy; Darcy is more interesting and complicated than that. He’s a young man who has less than ideal social skills and a huge responsibility. His parents have died and left him with a massive estate and a younger sister to take care of, and my sense is that he has had to grow up too fast. Matthew has incarnated Darcy as that complicated layered person who isn’t easy in his skin and who isn’t easy to love, yet who is a good person with a sense of honor and integrity. Matthew, unlike many actors, is not vain, and so was not afraid to be disliked by an audience at the beginning of the story; we have to dislike him because we are seeing him through Lizzie’s eyes. And we grow to love him as Lizzie does.”
(Joe Wright)

“I went in to read with him (the "rain" scene) and I virtually couldn´t get my lines out. I just kept staring at him thinking what the hell happened between you walking in as Matthew and you starting to read because he actually did turned into Darcy.”
(Keira Knightley)

"Then I met Matthew and we clicked immediately. I love him because he’s a big guy which is actually quite rare on screen today. Filmmakers tend to go for that slightly more androgynous look these days, which is lovely, but one of the most romantic things in the world is a manly man, particularly when, like Matthew, he’s intensely vulnerable as well. Matthew plays Darcy in a way I’ve never seen before, with huge vulnerability." (Keira Knightley)

“You need to see that kind of rugged beauty in Darcy, to know that here is a man who strides across fields and very much manages his own estate. With Matthew, you can see that etched across his face, yet he’s also got this extraordinary vulnerability.” (Keira Knightley)

Also, from P&P producer Paul Webster...
"The search for Darcy was a long one. We meet everyone, but there was never really any doubt that it would always be our first choice, Matthew Macfadyen." (Paul Webster)

Speaking of the DarcyliciousMatthew Macfadyen, I made and compiled a collage of him to show his versatile acting chops and his chameleon faces in various roles he played in his various TV and Film projects from the cute Hareton Earnshaw in Wuthering Heights to a cad Sir Felix Carbury in The Way We Live Now to the iconic Mr. Darcy in Pride & Prejudice to adorable Arthur Clennam in Little Dorrit, to Athos in The Three Musketeers, and Oblonsky (the philandering brother to KeiraKnightley's Anna Karenina) in Anna Kareninato name some of his many TV and film work.

In my opinion, Matthew Macfadyen is a very talented, superb, versatile, and an underrated character actor. One of my favorite actors that I'm very glad I discovered almost 11 years ago upon watching him as Mr. Darcy in one of my favorite films of all time, which is Pride & Prejudice. Not many actors can do what he can do. He can get into different characters easily and effortlessly and at the same time still do a great job making his characters believable and unrecognizable that you don't see him as Matthew himself, but the character he plays. He's that good...no, not just good, but an incredible, brilliant character actor that should be in more leading roles and films, but instead wisely chooses his film roles in various TV and film projects that showcased his wide range of acting ability in various roles he had played whether he was playing a good or villain character in either leading or supporting role. He has impressively done it all! That's why he's one of my favorite actors and I loved and enjoyed watching him in most of the TV and films I've seen him in thus far....

He even didsome stage plays/theater production work including Private Lives with Kim Catrall in London in April 2010.

MM's Other Works:

(1998) He acted in William Shakespeare's play, "Much Ado About Nothing," at the Playhouse Theatre in London, England with Saskia Reeves, Stephen Mangan, Bohdan Poraj, Paul Goodwin, Justin Salinger, Raad Rawi, Sarita Choudhury, Derek Hutchinson, and Seam Bealey in the cast. Declan Donnellan was director. See more » (via IMDB)

Anyway, here are the many character images (FYI: The MM character actor collage has beenupdated below!) of MM in21 28 of his 42 TV and films (as listed on IMDB)...MM fans, have you seen them all? (I've seen 1516 22 thus far...and soon to be 17 or 18 of 21 28!) If so, can you name the characters and TV/Films he starred/co-starred in from the collage below?

Her old friend Naomi (Alice Eve) is one of society’s elites - and Lacie is desperate to join her.
Inspired by our current obsession with ratings, this heightened satire is set in a world where each person is tagged with a numerical rating that can fluctuate by the minute.
Creator Charlie Brooker says: 'Nosedive' stars Bryce Dallas Howard as Lacie, a woman “who lives her life trying to please everyone so that they will give her a good rating,” but that soon proves soul-destroying.
Also...

Wright is, of course, a BAFTA-winning film director, having helmed the likes ofAtonement (2007) and Anna Karenina (2012).
"Film and television are different," he said of taking on Black Mirror. "But they're also equally important.
"I really needed this show to wash out the experiences that I'd been having - to freshen up a bit and to remind myself what working on a small budget was like. That was really good for me."
Bryce Dallas Howard plays the lead in 'Nosedive' - socially anxious Lacie - and Wright revealed that he'd been looking to work with the actress since she auditioned for Atonement 10 years previous.
"She was completely wrong for that role, but I loved her and I thought, 'One day I'm going to work with her' and then this script came in and she was the ideal person for it."
'Nosedive' - along with five more new Black Mirror episodes - is now available to stream exclusively on Netflix. [Digital Spy]

Jena Malone cameos in Nocturnal Animals starring Amy Adams and Jake Gyleenhaal!

Looks Jena Malone has worked with 5-time Oscar Nominee and Golden Globe Award Winner Amy Adams twice in two films released this year! First, in last March's blockbuster release Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (she appeared in The Ultimate Edition, where they had a couple scenes together...with Jena playing a lead scientist Jenet Klyburn of STAR Labs from Superman Comics, who work with Amy's Lois Lane in her investigation of Lex Luthor...that were omitted for the theatrical cut) directed by Zack Snyder (her Sucker Punch film director). Now, I just learned that Jena is also in Amy's upcoming film Nocturnal Animals (which has received a Silver Lion - Grand Jury Prize Award at the recent Venice Film Festival and getting early Oscar Buzz and rave reviews), where Jena cameos as well and plays a character named Sage Ross (I've heard that shehad another  couple scenes with Amy's lead character Susan). I was already looking forward to seeing this film with Amy Adams (one of my favorite actresses) in the lead with a great cast (including Jake Gyleenhaal, Isla Fisher, and Michael Shannon to name a few), but seeing Jena on the cast list on this one too (albeit in a cameo) made me even more excited to see this movie. I enjoyed watching her cameo scenes in the Blu-ray release of BvS (UC) with Amy and I'm curious about their 2 scenes in NA.

Armie Hammer, Laura Linney, and Ellie Bamber (who played Lydia Bennet in last February theatrical release: Pride and Prejudice and Zombies with Lily James) Also star.

Together, they span rebellion in France, the rise and fall of Joan of Arc, the terror of England’s Civil War and the deceitful dynastic murders culminating in the infamous reign of Richard III.

“Henry VI, Part 1” − England is in crisis. War rages and divisions within the English court threaten the crown. Young Henry VI causes outrage by marrying Margaret of Anjou; the scene is set for civil war. With Tom Sturridge, Sophie Okonedo and Hugh Bonneville.

“Henry VI, Part 2” − Bitter rivalries erupt. The feeble King Henry is overshadowed by Queen Margaret. Edward IV takes the throne, but youngest brother Richard has his eyes on the crown. With Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Sturridge, Sophie Okonedo and Keeley Hawes.

“Richard III” − In his quest for the crown, Richard plans the murder of his brother George. After the death of Edward IV, Richard’s path to the throne is clear, except for the princes in the tower.

I previously posted here last March that Pride & Prejudice director Joe Wright is in talks to direct another Churchill related movie, titled Darkest Hour. Here's an update with a confirmation of JW directing the WWII film with recent casting and theatrical release dates announced for both US and International. Also, with production and filming underway, JW is reteaming with Working Title Films (formerly Working Title Productions) and Focus Features, which will be his 4th feature film after P&P, Atonement, and Anna Karenina and 5th after Hanna (Focus Features).

The main cast are interesting choices with Gary Oldman as PM Winston Churchill, Kristin Scott Thomas as Churchill's wife Clementine, and as Churchill's personal secretary Elizabeth Nel. John Hurt and Ben Mendelsohn also star. Looks like no P&P actor, for the first time, is part of JW's new film, unless one or two of them who frequently works with him makes a cameo. We shall see...This will also be the third JW film (with Hanna and PAN, being the other two) without Keira Knightley (with whom he directed on three of his award winning films including his feature film debut, Pride & Prejudice 2005) on it.

Read more Darkest Hour casting and theatrical releases info. via Deadline below...

Focus Features is reteaming with Working Title Films and Joe Wright on Darkest Hour which will hit U.S. theaters on Nov. 24, 2017 with Universal Pictures International launching overseas on Dec. 29, 2017. Production begins this fall. Darkest Hour marks Wright’s fourth feature with Working Title and Focus after Pride & Prejudice, Atonement and Anna Karenina. Wright also directed the Focus thriller Hanna starring Saoirse Ronan.

Wright will direct Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill in the film which is penned by Theory of Everything‘s Anthony McCarten. He is producing as well on Darkest Hour with Lisa Bruce and Working Title co-chairs Tim Bevan and Eric FellnerAlso on tap for Darkest Hour is John Hurt as Neville Chamberlain (who Churchill succeeded as Prime Minster), Lily James as Churchill’s personal secretary, Ben Mendelsohn as King George VI and Kristen Scott Thomas as Churchill’s wife Clementine.

Darkest Hour‘s plot is described as follows: Within days of becoming Prime Minister of Great Britain, Winston Churchill must face one of his most turbulent and defining trials: exploring a negotiated peace treaty with Nazi Germany, or standing firm to fight for the ideals, liberty and freedom of a nation. As the unstoppable Nazi forces roll across Western Europe and the threat of invasion is imminent, and with an unprepared public, a skeptical King, and his own party plotting against him, Churchill must withstand his darkest hour, rally a nation, and attempt to change the course of world history.

Wright’s canon with Focus Features and Working Title has amassed two Oscars, two Golden Globe Awards, and four BAFTA wins.

Last year when we celebrated here the P&P (2005) movie's 10th Year Anniversary, one of our guest bloggers Karin Quint (of the Dutch Jane Austen websiteJane Austen.nl) who wrote a different perspective on Joe Wright's Pride & Prejudice (2005) movie: Joe Wright's different take on his Pride & Prejudice film keeps Jane Austen's work alivewrote aJane Austen Travel Guide book titled: Jane Austen's England. In 2013, Karin travelled through England and visited each location. Het Engeland van Jane Austen (Dutch title) was published in the spring of 2014 by the renowned Dutch publisher Gottmer. So far, it’s doing very well in the Netherlands – a second edition was just published in July 2016. Karin very recently started a Kickstarter Campaign project: Travel Guide - Jane Austen's England to get the funding for English translations to her 300 pages long book for international Austen fans, who according to her, greatly expressed their interest in reading this guidebook, but unfortunately, it is only published and available in Dutch only...at least for now. So, if you're interested in an English Edition of this book, please support Karin's Kickstarter Campaign and help her reached the funding goal for its costly English translation. This book also features images of those stunningly gorgeous locations and behind the scenes info. from Joe Wright's Pride & Prejudice (2005) film.

AboutJane Austen's England
[header and book cover courtesy of Karin Quint]

Jane Austen is one of England’s most famous and beloved writers. Two centuries after her death, her novels are still being widely read and – together with the many movie adaptations and spin-offs – continue to win new fans today.

Jane Austen’s England is the first (and only!) travel guide devoted to exploring locations in England that have a unique connection with either Austen herself, her work, and/or the adaptations of her books.

It is a must-have for Austen fans, but it will also guide anyone who loves England as much as Austen did to delightful new discoveries in the British countryside and cities.

Why do we need your help?

Many Janeites from countries around the world have expressed great interest in a guidebook like this – but it is now only available in Dutch! We would really like to have it translated into English to make it accessible to them. Unfortunately, a translation is a costly thing – and the book is more than 300 pages long! With this Kickstarter campaign, you can help make it possible by buying one or more copies in advance, or by making a donation.

Contents

The guidebook starts with background information about Jane Austen’s life and the time she lived in. This is followed by descriptions of more than 200 locations that are clustered into nine different chapters – each covering a specific geographical region in England.
Each location in the book includes its history, an extensive description of the link with Austen, and practical information such as address, phone number and opening hours. Included throughout are walks, interviews, and quotes from Austen’s works and private letters that make the guidebook entertaining – as well as informative – to read.
The last chapters provide an overview of film locations per adaptation, and a description of three themed road-trips by car: Pride and Prejudice 1995 in 4 days, Pride and Prejudice 2005 in 5 days and Jane Austen’s Hampshire in 7 days. The text is richly illustrated with colour photographs. Regions and large cities are accompanied by detailed maps.

  Jena Malone as Lydia Bennet

Lydia's focus is purely ribbons and soldiers. She's fifteen years old and she's very silly and she's very romantic and she's in love of the idea of being in love... (about Lydia Bennet from P&P companion book)

~*~

"Oh, Mama! You must all go to Brighton, for that is the place to get husbands. I hope you have half my good luck." (Lydia Bennet)

~*~
"Her options are so different than our options today. For her the only way to secure her life is to get married; otherwise you live with your family or leave home and are a governess in someone else's family, which gives you a lower social status, and no hope of marrying anyone of your own particular class. Many women were much more pragmatic about reasons for marrying, and the idea for marrying for love was regarded as frivolous. But Lydia was in love with love, so she is over-joyed to elope with handsome young Wickham. She fails to see any disastrous consequences, and returns triumphantly to her family home, the only married daughter, thrilled to be able to lord it over the others." (Jena Malone)

"She [Jena Malone] was wonderful. I tell you what, I think Lydia is an incredibly difficult part to play, I think it is one of the hardest parts and we met a huge amount of actresses for that role and finally we were in LA doing some casting out there and she had driven seven hours from Lake Tahoe to come and meet us by herself and she turned up this funny little thing. I thought, 'Oh God, you’re so obviously not going to be Lydia,' and then she started reading her and it was extraordinary. She kind of reminded me a little bit of Nicole Kidman in 'To Die For' and I thought that was interesting." (Joe Wright)

Movie Casting News: Jena Malone and Josh Hartnett to star in 'A Moment To Remember'

This is an interesting casting news (though I'm a bit late on posting this here) and movie title. Today's birthday celebrant Jena Malone will star as the female lead in a new indie drama, A Moment to Remember with Josh Harnett, who was in talks (in August) to co-star with her, according to Deadline. I thought the title and premise sounded familiar and that I've seen a movie similar to this one. Sure enough, I remember seeing a similar one, which was a South Korean movie of the same title (and premise) a couple years ago. It was a very good melo-drama (but a tearjerker one) Korean film. So, with Jena starring on this Hollywood remake opposite handsome Josh Harnett, plus the writer of Erin Brockovich. I am most definitely looking forward to seeing this movie!

Watch: Peter Wight in Netflix's The Crown starring Claire Foy and Matt Smith

I recently finished watching (in less than a day), Netflix's new original miniseries The Crown (The early reign of Queen Elizabeth II of England is portrayed) starring Claire Foy (Little Dorrit) and Matt Smith (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies). It premiered earlier this month, November 4th with ten episodes. Having not read any news (other than it was going to be on Netflix and I didn't know who the actors were going to be in the main cast either) or spoilers about this miniseries. I thought it would be done after 10 episodes, but it looks like, this was just season one and season two is coming soon. When? I don't know, but I sure can't wait! I got hooked watching this miniseries, since I love watching period dramas and especially with the royals or monarchies (ie. The Young Victoria, The Other Boleyn Girl, The Duchess, etc.). I thought this was a very good and a must-watch miniseries (I was fascinated by it, whether it was accurate or not about Queen Elizabeth's life story in her early reign) with a great ensemble cast, beautiful score, great production quality and writing. It got me hooked watching and what a pleasant surprise to see Peter Wight (aka P&P 2005 movie's own Mr. Gardiner) albeit in a cameo role as a Newspaper editor in Episode 6! I thought he looked familiar! I didn't know he was in this drama. So, that was interesting and yet so random at the same time. If you haven't seen this yet, I highly recommend you do. This Thanksgiving break would be the best time to binge-watch this, if you have the time to watch, of course.
